Genesis House by SUH Architects in collaboration with HLW was honored in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards for 2022 in the “Experience Design” category.

The Innovation by Design Awards, which can be found in the October 2022 issue of Fast Company, honor the designers and businesses solving the most crucial problems of today and anticipating the pressing issues of tomorrow. The competition, now in its 11th year, features a range of blue-chip companies, emerging startups, and hungry young talents. It is one of the most sought-after design awards in the industry.

Recognized by Fast Company for delivering an innovative and compelling user experience, Genesis House is a 46,000-square-foot homage to Genesis’ Korean luxury culture, poised to be an iconic destination in NYC’s Meatpacking District. From artful installations and haute cuisine to luminary engagements and the impressive collection of Genesis luxury vehicles, an intriguing sanctuary with plenty to explore awaits. More than simply a showroom, this is a celebration of elevated living through rich surroundings and intellectual nourishment.

Challenged by the perception of traditional showrooms, SUH Architects and HLW New York collaborated to communicate the brand’s ethos of luxury through layered programming, rich materials, attractive views, and dynamic scaling. This scheme –– rooted in the brand’s heritage through the incorporation of various aesthetic cues from traditional and contemporary Korean design principles –– is accentuated by the brand’s signature raw and refined palette of metal, concrete, and wood.

“We love that this project creates a conversation with New York by layering contours. We were truly fortunate that the client, site, cultural program and partners like Onjium of Genesis House all lent themselves to creating a unique oasis of design and modern traditions that are worth gathering for.  Combined with the hospitality of Genesis House, I do think there may even be healing, especially after all New York and the world have been through lately!” said KyungEn Kim, Principal, Suh Architects.

“Genesis House is as much a luxury brand experience center as it is an homage to a storied legacy with rich cultural roots. Working alongside SUH Architects to bring each and every inspired detail to life, our collaboration mirrored our intent –– an immersive experience that is traditionally Korean, and yet, distinctly New York City. It’s an artful, sophisticated oasis set against a bustling, modern metropolitan background where heritage is both celebrated and advanced,” said Ed Shim, Principal, HLW.

“A common theme among this year’s Innovation by Design honorees, which range from healthcare interfaces to autonomous driving technology, is permanence,” said Brendan Vaughan, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “The products that leaped out to our editors and judges went against our quick-fix consumer culture, while also manifesting a more inclusive vision of design.”
